Today Lubos found me just as I was coming to record my afternoon with Pamela—she is doing very well in her new position, and her spirits are high. My time with her was not really newsworthy, but I was in the mood to write. Lubos gave me something to write about.

“Freya has ended her relationship with Ryan,” he told me.

My heart sank. “I am sorry to hear that.”

Lubos sighed and flicked out his wings. “It was time. I confess, I brought you to her before the holiday for my sake as well as yours—I wanted your opinion on her state of mind.”

This surprised me: that Lubos had wanted my opinion! “You give me too much credit.”

“Ah, but you know her, too, Asa’el,” he pointed out. “Before you were restricted from her, you came to know her nearly as well as I have, though she was never your charge. Your assessment confirmed what I have been thinking, and so I encouraged her to break things off gently.”

“What was the cause of the break?” I asked him. “They seemed to be doing well together.”

“They were doing well, but the truth is they were mismatched,” Lubos said. “He was very steady, while she is filled with passion. Your metaphor is a good one—she is fire, while he is more like stone, and stone cannot feed the flame. She was growing uncomfortable with his ease and his quiet, and it caused fights and tension between them.”

I did not know that. My heart hurt for my fire woman. “How is she?”

Lubos looked mournful, his aura reflecting a deep, dull ache. “She knows that it was the right decision, and Ryan took it well. But she is hurting. She had high hopes for this man, and she does love him.”

“But it was not enough,” I murmured.

“Imperfect love is never enough. Even perfect love can be ruined by the world. That is why our task is sometimes so difficult, brother.”

I wanted to see her, to speak encouragement and comfort to her in her hurt—but that is Lubos’ task, and I could not ask to visit her again so soon after I had seen her. “Thank you for telling me, brother. Please keep me apprised, if you find the time.”

“Of course. I think of her as partly your charge as well. I will tell you if anything changes.”

He left me then, to go back to her, I hope. Though I could not go with him, my thoughts remain with her, and shall for some time, I think.
